The Japanese tea ceremony is a deeply spiritual practice and a highly ritualized experience. It brings together the tea master and guests not merely for drinking tea, but for appreciating beauty and engaging in meaningful conversation. A key element in every tea room was the tokonoma alcove, where a hanging scroll (kakemono) was displayed, featuring calligraphy, a poem, a philosophical inscription, or a painting, accompanied by a carefully arranged floral composition. Another essential element was the ceremonial cloth, on which the tea master arranged the utensils for the ritual. These cloths often featured symbolic patterns, serving as objects of contemplation. Soft lighting and flickering shadows on the walls completed the scene, creating an immersive atmosphere that deepened the experience of the tea ceremony.

coaster for cups and tea accessories in an assortment: hand embroidered sashiko, kasuri cotton, designer shibori fabric
This example of a tea stand dates from the late 19th/early 20th century and was owned by textile designer and collector Lenor Larsen. We made an attempt to recreate a similar stand, but in linen, using the same pattern and using the shibori technique

The paper is gathered into "original horns" and then tied tightly with thread. The collected folds form a unique pattern with diverging rays
During the tea ceremony, all the utensils for the tea ceremony were neatly laid out on a stand, which not only protected inherently valuable objects, but also served as an object of contemplation. These stands were made of brocade or thick paper

For example, this paper coaster is dyed using natural indigo and decorated with large patterns called kuma shibori
