Japanese mingei aesthetics

The folk art of mingei is a remarkable example of how everyday utilitarian objects can be transformed into true works of art, imbued with deep spiritual essence.

Our collection reinterprets ancient sashiko embroidery, traditional shibori hand-dyeing, and vintage samples of the renowned kasuri cotton.

It also incorporates traditional garments of the common people, blending this rich heritage seamlessly into contemporary fashion.

For centuries, luxurious silks and elegant garments were reserved for the upper class, while common people made their clothing from natural materials like tree fibers, hemp, and later, cotton. Yet, the human instinct for beauty transcends status, manifesting in the creation of intricate dyeing techniques, weaving patterns, and embroidery.

HANTENS
Vintage kasuri cotton hanten
The hanten is traditionally made from the renowned kasuri cotton, valued for its ability to repel moisture and retain warmth. This fabric became so highly regarded that in 1957, the Japanese government designated kasuri as an Important Intangible Cultural Property.

What makes our hanten special?

  • Crafted from 100% natural materials, including the outer fabric, insulation, and lining, all made from pure cotton
  • Designed for comfort and ease of movement, it is lightweight, breathable, and effortlessly stylish
  • The minimalist yet cozy design ensures it remains a timeless wardrobe staple
  • We offer two variations: one made from authentic kasuri cotton, and the other from hand-dyed shibori fabric
The hanten, often referred to as a "Japanese quilted jacket," is a distinctive addition to any wardrobe. Traditionally worn over a kimono during colder months, it has long inspired designers worldwide, who have seamlessly integrated it into modern fashion.

Versatile and stylish, the hanten can be worn open like a jacket or fastened at the front with ties. Its relaxed fit and wide, cropped sleeves make it easy to layer over sweaters, hoodies, blouses, and other everyday essentials, blending effortlessly into contemporary wardrobes.

DENIM JACKETS
Men's Denim Jacket with Hand-Stitched Sashiko Embroidery and Vintage Cotton Accents
Our men’s denim jacket is adorned with the Asanoha pattern, serving as a symbolic bridge between the workwear of Japan’s common people and the everyday, comfortable clothing of today.

Additionally, the design featured on the vintage engraving is not just an Asanoha pattern but one created using the Kanoko Shibori technique—an intricate, almost jewel-like method where tiny 2 mm knots are meticulously tied into the fabric. These knots prevent dye from penetrating certain areas, resulting in a beautifully detailed pattern during the dyeing process.
Asanoha—the hemp leaf pattern—is one of the oldest designs found on clothing, pottery, and interior decor.

Cotton was introduced to Japan around the 1400s, but its supply depended entirely on imports from Korea, where it was cultivated. Initially, cotton was worn exclusively by the upper class and high-ranking military commanders.

Before cotton became available, common people had been making their clothing from hemp, which grew abundantly across Japan. As a tribute to those times and in appreciation of the only fabric accessible to the masses, the hemp leaf pattern became a widely used and cherished motif in textiles and beyond.
