Every year, about 500 tons of kimonos are discarded in Japan, resulting in the loss of luxurious fabrics, hand-painted designs, complex dyeing techniques, refined embroidery, and the rich symbolism of the patterns.

We decided to give these vintage kimonos a second life: not just by re-tailoring them into more practical clothing, but by creating entirely new items that reflect a fresh perspective on the original intentions of Japanese artisans.

Japanese people hold their traditional clothing in high regard, but the pace of modern life demands a more convenient and mobile wardrobe.

VELVET COAT
VELVET COAT WITH OBI BELT
The obi belt is an essential part of any kimono. Made from luxurious silk fabrics, it is often adorned with intricate embroidery, gold threadwork, or hand-painted designs. Each obi is handcrafted, making it a true work of art.

With a length of up to four meters, it can be tied in various styles—shaped like a butterfly, an envelope, or flowers such as morning glories, irises, and roses. Some obi styles feature long, flowing trains that reach the ground, while others include unique knots, like the "sparrow with outstretched wings." This exquisite craftsmanship is designed to enhance the beauty of both the kimono and its wearer.

We took a bold step by making the obi the highlight of a luxurious velvet coat. Placed across the back and cuffs, the vintage obi belt is displayed in all its beauty, revealing delicate pastel patterns of open fans — a symbol of prosperity.

VELVET JACKET
Velvet jacket with vintage kimono lining
One of Yuriko’s core ideas is to breathe new life into old pieces that can no longer serve their original purpose.

While there is a small group of people who appreciate and know how to wear vintage kimonos, we have created our own version—velvet jackets lined with luxurious silk kimono fabric.

This is not a downgrade but an elevation of its status. In Japanese culture, the most exquisite elements are often hidden from view, known only to the wearer—a quiet luxury that speaks to true refinement. Now, you too can own a piece of this "silent luxury".

FRAPP APRONS
Frapp Aprons crafted from vintage kimono and yukata fabrics
In Japan, the "one thing" principle is deeply valued—whether in clothing, home decor, art, or gifts, there should be a single focal element that carries meaning. Your Frapp apron embodies this idea, serving as a statement piece that speaks for itself. With its unique design—each one telling its own story—it adds character to any outfit, enhancing elegance, refined taste, and a touch of Japanese aesthetics

Our Frapps are more than just accessories; they are wearable art

While they bring joy, they also require careful handling. They are not meant for machine washing, rough handling, or high-temperature ironing. For the best care, we recommend dry cleaning and gentle storage in the washi rice paper pouch in which they are sold
The name of our Frapp aprons comes from the Japanese word "furappu" (meaning "fabric scrap") and the English "wrap up"

Each fabric piece used to create our Frapps was once part of a beautiful kimono. However, fading popularity of traditional clothing, and Japan’s humid climate have made many kimonos unsuitable for daily wear

Honoring the artisans who crafted these exquisite fabrics and unique patterns, we decided to give vintage kimonos a new life

Our Frapps are strips of fabric 38−40 cm wide (the traditional width used for kimonos), lined with silk, and secured at the waist with silk ties. Designed to blend effortlessly into any wardrobe, they add a touch of uniqueness, a reflection of their wearer, and a distinctly Japanese elegance

SUITS
The wrap skirt effortlessly adjusts to fit any size from S to XL, while the loose-fitting jacket has been tailored to a comfortable length and adorned with a delicate placket that mimics the eri collar of a kimono. Stylish yet practical.

Our collection features two sets, each a true masterpiece that merges the craftsmanship of vintage kimono makers with the skills of an Haute Couture-level tailor team, entrusted with such meticulous work.
Kurotomesode is a formal black kimono worn by married women. It is ceremonial attire typically donned by the mothers of the bride and groom at weddings. Given the rarity of such occasions, a kurotomesode usually remains stored away, awaiting the next grand event. We decided to breathe new life into these luxurious garments by transforming them into beautiful and functional sets that seamlessly integrate into the daily life of the modern city dweller.
The "Ceremonial Procession" Set
The intricate embroidery and masterful weaving on the hem of this set invite endless admiration, offering a glimpse into history while allowing each observer to find their own meaning within its details.

The ensemble is accented with natural red silk, a nod to the rich tradition of Japanese women’s attire. The use of red silk for kimono dates back to the Edo period (1615−1868), when the pigment was derived from the safflower (benibana), an exceptionally expensive plant. The extraction process was long and complex, making red-dyed silk a true luxury.

Although mineral dyes were later introduced, red remained a powerful symbol in Japanese clothing—representing strength, perseverance, determination, and well-earned happiness.
The image of a daimyo procession—representing the elite samurai, or "great name"—is a common motif found on kimono. During the Tokugawa rule, each daimyo was required to travel to the shogunate headquarters in Edo with his entourage and spend a year in service. Meanwhile, their wives and children had to remain in the capital. This system was designed to ensure loyalty by keeping the ruling class under control.

In 1867, power shifted from the feudal shogunate system back to the Japanese emperor, marking the end of the Tokugawa era. With it, the 500-year dominance of the samurai also came to a close. This transition ushered in the Meiji Restoration, a period of progressive reforms and modernization.

The "Waves and Birds" Set
Waxwings—small birds that winter in Japan—are a symbol of the approaching spring and nature’s awakening. Their lively flock, woven into the pattern, creates a playful mood, foreshadowing the start of something new.

The ensemble is accented with natural blue silk, evoking a sense of coolness, freshness, purity, and renewal. A woman embodying spring in this luxurious attire will be truly irresistible.
Air and water—two elements in a constant state of change. Freedom, fluidity, and the ability to adapt to external circumstances without losing momentum are essential components of a successful life strategy in times of transition.

Waves never repeat themselves, forming an intricate kaleidoscope of patterns. Soft pastel tones of the birds' feathers complement the scene, infusing it with strength and joy.
